Quartz Rotators rotate the plane of polarized light in a beam that propagates along the crystalline optic axis of quartz. The amount of rotation depends on the thickness of the rotator; it is independent of the rotation of the plate about the beam direction. Standard INRAD Quartz Rotators are mounted on a 25 mm diameter ring and have a 16 mm clear aperture. At least 95% of the light intensity is rotated by 90° for all wavelengths within the stated wavelength range. All of these standard rotators have a slight wedge in order to prevent etaloning.

Quartz Retardation Plates, or Waveplates, in general, induce a phase retardation between orthogonal polarization directions. Beam propagation is perpendicular to the direction of the crystalline optic axis. Retardation is dependent on the rotation of the plate about the beam direction. The maximum amount of phase retardation, G, for a waveplate of thickness t is given by G = 2p Dn t / l where Dn is the birefringence of quartz at the wavelength of use and l is the wavelength.

Standard retardance tolerances for a quartz waveplate correlate to a thickness tolerance of +/- 0.4 µm.

All retardation plates are manufactured on a Custom Basis; please submit a Request for Quotation. Print, specifications and quantity required.
